Sometimes we feel that our selfhood
is being encroached upon by . . . (oth-
ers), as a candle might feel that its self
is being denied when a fluorescent
light is turned on . . . Most of us are not
candles in the wind, alone against the
darkness; we are burning in the com-
pany of greater lights. You are the
light of the world, too, but no one no-
tices. It's all right. It's better to light
your candle than to curse the light . . .
Recognize the distinctive nature of
your own special light. God has made
you unique, and the time will come,
soon enough, when the master of the
house will set you on his table to burn
alone in the festive darkness. In the
meantime, relax and shine. Participate
in the general glory of light, rejoice in
amazement at the fusion of lights, and
be conscious always that you have been
made unique. ©

Southern offers many opportunities for individuals to
shine;

With experience comes maturity and the ability to handle re-
sponsibility, as well as the knowledge that we are as God has
created us and in that, we are individuals with our own needs,
personalities, and goals.

College
Life

A university is a world all in
its own and should be recog-
nized as such. It offers a place
to live, eat, work, learn and re-
lax. The college years are a
transition period for most stu-
dents. Students are sliding out
from under the protective wing
of their families and moving
into the harsh world of busi-
ness and making a living. Al-
though college should prepare
students for this working
world, it acts as a lingering
time of childhood for many.
Unprotected by families, they
cut loose and do all the "living"
they possibly can before set-
tling down. College life is dif-
ferent from any other period in
a person's life and students
should take advantage of it.

Activities

Interested students can find
enough activities on campus to
keep them busy all day, every
day. There are organizations
for people interested in any-
thing from rugby to religion.
There are social groups, service
groups, and groups that are
just there. Most departments
have organizations for students
within the department. There
are also performing groups
open to students such as the
"PRIDE" or Southern Style.

The University Activities
Council brings concerts to the
University each quarter with
such top names as Gino Van-
nelli, Stephen Stills, Charlie
Pride and Steve Martin. Be-
sides concerts, the UAC pro-
vides movies for the students
which are shown on Friday
nights. The movies vary in
type, but are usually inter-
esting to most students.

For the sports lover, football,
soccer, basketball, baseball, and
other sports offer a chance to
get involved either as a partici-
pant or a spectator. The Intra-
mural program offers the ath-
letically inclined person a
chance to get involved in such
sports as flag football, basket-
ball, and water polo.

For those students inter-
ested in politics, there is the
Associated Student Body. Elec-
tions are held quarterly to fill
any positions that have been
vacated in the Senate or other
divisions. The ASB is divided
into executive, judicial, and leg-
islative branches and is run
much like the federal
government.

If a student happens to be-
long to a sorority or fraternity
he has songfest and Greek
games to look forward to, as
well as all the other activities
that go along with being a
Greek.

The Union building is a good
place for students to go when
they feel like being active. The
gameroom has every type of
game table imaginable from
foosball to pinball. The televi-
sion room, in a quiet corner of
the building, is a good place for
the not-so-active people to go
to relax.

Although many areas have
been neglected, this should of-
fer an idea of just how much
there is to do on campus.

Classes

Classes become a daily rou-
tine and can become boring if
the student is not careful.
Eight O'clock classes should be
avoided if the student is inter-
ested in learning. In most
cases, an 8:00 class is just an ex-
tra hour of sleep before the day
gets going.

Core requirements are, in
general, the classes a student
least wants to take. Although
they can be interesting, he is
usually ready to move on to his
major and leave the other
courses behind.

Some schools use the "bait
and switch" method in getting
students to sign up for courses.
They lure the students to a
course with an easy teacher
and then change the teacher on
the day after registration. An-
other method is to simply put
"staff" instead of specifying
the teacher, leading a student
to think he will get an easy
teacher.

Finding the right teacher is
sometimes hard to do. Some
students may think one teacher
is particularly good, while oth-
ers don't, so students never
really know what they're get-
ting into. The testing methods
of teachers could easily take up
a whole book in themselves.
There are basically three types
of tests: 1) short answer, 2)
multiple choice and True-False,
and 3) discussion. Most teach-
ers will use a combination of
these. The problems arise in
the grading system and
amount of material being cov-
ered. Some teachers ask only
the most obvious facts, but
there is at least one teacher in
every department who will ask
anything from footnotes to
page numbers. These are the
ones to look out for.

26

Invariably after preparing
for what the teacher is sure to
ask, tests are passed out, and
the 75 point question is on the
footnote on page 183 and the 15
point question is on the obvious
fact. The only thing for a stu-
dent to do on a test like this is
to say a lot without ever com-
mitting himself to any hard
facts. Some teachers seem to
think that how much is said is
more important than what is
said. This doesn't always work,
but it certainly can't hurt.

The size of a class has a lot to
do with how much enjoyment is
gotten out of it. The smaller
the class, the more involvement
required, so naturally more in-
terest is evoked. In larger
classes, the teacher tends to
spend more time lecturing, so
less class participation is in-
volved and therefore less inter-
est is aroused from class
members.

Both Monday-Wednesday-
Friday classes and Tuesday-
Thursday classes have their ad-
vantages and disadvantages. If
a lot of time is needed for class-
work, then Tuesday- Thursday
classes can be the most benefi-
cial. If the class is mostly lec-
tures, then Monday— Wednes-
day-Friday classes may be
better because they require a
shorter attention span.

When it comes right down to
it, classes depend on the stu-
dents. If they go into a class ex-
pecting to learn and to enjoy it,
chances are they will.

DORMS

Dorm life can be summed up
in one word-HECTIC! Stu-
dents who are adventurous
enough to live in a dormitory
will find that: 1) they get little
or no sleep, 2) do little or no
studying, and 3) can always
find someone to do either of
the above with them.

A dorm room is the most
unique habitat of the human
species. It is a combination
bedroom, kitchen, living room,
recreation room and storage
room stuffed into approxi-
mately 15 square feet of tile
and plaster. Room checks will
find books and papers stacked
in corners and dirty clothes hid-
den under anything and
everything.

A dorm bathroom is a sacred
place and should never be domi-
nated during "rush hours".
Sinks double for washing faces,
clothes or even dishes when
necessary, and windows may
serve as temporary clothes
lines. Dorm showers are unique
in that spurts of hot water
come whenever anyone in the
dorm happens to turn on cold
water, and cold water domi-
nates if more than one person
is showering at the same time.

31

' M: ir*

Dorm students soon learn to
study under strange conditions,
such as blaring stereos and con-
stant interruption. Friends
wander aimlessly in and out of
rooms stopping to ask about
daily assignments or a new
date. Students must also learn
to sleep under these conditions
if any sleep is to be gotten.

Roommates offer an inter-
esting addition to dorm life at
no extra charge. A roommate is
a person with whom a room,
clothes, food and anything else
that happens to be around is
shared, and yet is only seen in
the morning during the battle
over whose alarm is going off.
It seems that roommates, or
"roomies" as they are some-
times known, have opposite
class schedules so that when
one can sleep late, the other has
to be up at 5:30, but amazingly
enough, after a week or two,
the one who can sleep usually
does so without even noticing
the other getting up.

The food is possibly the most
intriguing aspect of college
life. Students who are used to
home cooked, balanced meals
arrive on campus to face meals
of soybean burgers, day old
bread and cokes.

There is no substitute for liv-
ing in a dormitory, and there is
no other life style that it can be
compared to. It's a combination
of family, friends, work, play
and everything else that makes
life so interesting.

PRESIDENT

Dr. Aubrey Lucas

In his second year as president of the university, Dr.
Aubrey Lucas made an effort to get to know the students at
USM. His winning smile and friendly personality won him
instant popularity with all who met him. Dr. Lucas was in-
augurated on March 19, 1976 as the sixth president of the
university and has since brought a closer union between stu-
dents and administrators than the university has seen in the
past. His genuine interest in student opinions has shown
through in daily affairs.

There is a series of steps a person
must take in order to become a stu-
dent at the University of Southern
Mississippi. First, he must submit an
application to the Office of Admis-
sions. If accepted, he then must pro-
ceed to the Housing Office in order
to reserve a place to live. The Offia
of the Registrar aids the student in
selecting courses and signing up for
them. After accomplishing these
steps, the student then must encoun-
ter the Business Office in order to
pay his fees.

In many cases, students may
need help in paying fees. The Of-
fice of Student Aid and Scholar-
ships is available to help students
in any way possible. The Univer-
sity is concerned with helping stu-
dents choose the right field. The
Counseling Center and the Career
Development Center have trained
personnel to advise students in
making decisions. The Placement
Bureau provides job opportu-
nities for students who want to
gain experience and make some
money while attending school, as
well as helping to place graduates
in work in their major.

POST OFFICE HOURS
MON-FRI
SAT 8AM-9.

The University Bookstore is a
miniature department store, sup-
plying the student population
with gifts, greeting cards, school
supplies and many other things.
The Textbook Service loans or sells
books to students for their classes.
Most books are loaned to students
as long as they are enrolled in a
course. Probably the most popular
place on campus is the Post Office.
No student's day would be com-
plete without checking to see if he
or any of his "boxmates" have
gotten any mail.

The University Commons supplies on-cam-
pus students with three daily meals Monday
through Saturday and two meals on Sunday.
In addition to the regular meal line, there is
a line for students who are watching their
weight. Campus brains can usually be found
indulged in a book at the Library. Besides
study aids, the library also has current news-
papers and magazines. The Clinic is the
campus emergency room. Students can be
found there around the clock, seeking aid for
sprained ankles, headaches, or coughs. Cam-
pus Security, besides giving parking tickets,
protects the campus and students 24 hours a
day.

58

All activities must be cleared with
the Office of Student Activities. This
includes meetings, selling food or lis-
tening to an off-campus speaker.
The Photo Center is always available
to cover activities with their ace pho-
tographers. They also take individ-
ual pictures, sell film and develop
film at a discount price to students.
To announce an activity, the Print-
ing Center can provide posters,
hand-bills or letters.

Football

This year was the first time in three years that Southern had
played on campus, as all of us have anxiously awaited the com-
pletion of the new stadium. The Golden Eagles dropped close deci-
sions to Mississippi State, Florida State, and Louisiana Tech, cap-
turing wins over Memphis State and Texas-Arlington to close out
the 1976-77 season with a disappointing 2-9 record.

Ben Garry ran for 1236 yards to break a 24 year seasonal rush-
ing record, for USM, set in 1952 by Hugh Laurin Pepper. Ben
lacked only 99 yards to break the all-time career rushing record
set by Bucky McElroy.

HIGH

SCHOOL

DAY

Once a year high school stu-
dents from the surrounding area
are invited to the USM campus
for a day of fun and getting to
know Southern. The Spring 1976
high school day theme was Spring
Round Up. Students were given
western hats and learned about
the many facets of the University
of Southern Mississippi. To end
the day, the group was treated to
a dance at the golf course

REGISTRATION

Registration, held quarterly, is one of the many necessary
evils of University life. Standing in line for hours just to get
inside and then finding that the class you've been waiting
three quarters to take is closed, filling out computer sheets,
paying fees and finally picking up books are just a few of the
escapades of Registration.

Department of
Aerospace

The Department of Aerospace Studies- Air Force ROTC-completed

an excellent 76-77 school year under the direction of Lt. Col. Hugh D.

McCracken Jr., the department chairman and detachment

commander.

The Air Force ROTC program selects and commissions second

lieutenants through a college education program. The program is

available to men and women. Any student in good standing with the

university may take the general military course as a freshman or

sophomore. Selection into the final two years of the program, the

Professional Officer Course, is on a competitive basis.

Limited quotas established by the Air Force result in a very elite

corps of cadets. Scholarships are available on a competitive basis. A

major feature of the program is that it is designed to provide

realistic leadership experiences for all cadets.

In everyone's life, there is an experience for which they
will always be grateful. Editing the 1977 SOUTHERNER
has been such an experience for me. It has provided me with
a chance to take on responsibility and to learn while doing
something I enjoy. It has also given me an outlet for prac-
ticing the skills and techniques of yearbook production I
have learned over the years.

No editor could produce a book without the help of a good
staff. I would like to thank Evelyn Dunn for being an Assis-
tant Editor and a friend I could depend on and Mr. Warren
Dunn for having faith in my judgements. Special thanks go
to all the folks at Photo Service for putting up with my last
minute photo sessions and to Vicki Wilson for being on my
side. As important as a good staff are a family and friends
who provide support and a listening ear when necessary. I
especially want to thank Rusty Slider for being a good shoul-
der to cry on and for giving me some much needed moral
support.

The staff and I have worked hard for the single purpose of
presenting the University of Southern Mississippi with an
accurate and enjoyable record of the 1976-77 academic year.
I hope you will feel we have accomplished our task.
